Tips for Taking Heartwarming Family Photos

Get to know your client. Creating a comfortable environment is key to capturing candid moments. Clients that feel like they already know you and can be “themselves” in front of the camera is so important! This is where the magic happens. True authentic moments come from vulnerability and letting the walls come down. Connecting with your clients prior to their session can take away that awkward “just met” feeling and allows you to jump right into creating genuine moments. So take the extra time to send the questionnaire + setup a call.

Letting the kiddos take the lead allows you to avoid any grumpy meltdowns that might put a damper on your family photo sesh. From my experience, kids are the pros at creating those heartwarming moments that’ll make your heart flutter. Allowing your kids make decisions during the sessions is so effective. Trust me, I’ve seen it time and time again. Prep a handful of fun games + prompts for your families to keep the energy going the entire session!

Keep the screens at home. We all know that during screen time our kids tune out. When use screens as a distraction or reward – cue the blank stares. During a photoshoot your goal is to create a fun + engaging environment! This allows you to capture genuine emotion and reaction from little ones. Wether its good or bad behavior, this is still a “moment”. Oooooh, if only photos could talk they would tell you some pretty crazy stories! The magic you can create from the connection between your clients can be incredible – no matter the circumstances. Make sure you are cultivating a space for those moments to happen.
